PATH (People Assisting The Homeless) is seeking master’s level social service professionals to join our DHS ICMS Street Services Program serving the LA Metro as a Mental Health Specialist. This position is for the day shift with the hours of 3:00 am - 11:30 am five days a week.

WHAT WE DO
Since its foundation in 1984, PATH has pioneered bold and effective approaches to assist people experiencing homelessness. PATH operates services throughout California, connecting our clients to a comprehensive continuum of homelessness prevention, street outreach, employment preparation and placement assistance, individualized case management, supportive services, interim housing, and permanent supportive housing.
PATH’s Street Outreach programs participate in daily street outreach to people experiencing homelessness and living on the streets to provide and link them with services that will ultimately lead them to stabilize in housing long-term. The DHS ICMS Program is comprised of a multidisciplinary team and conducts daily street outreach within the Los Angeles Metro transit system throughout the Metro Los Angeles region.
WHAT IS A MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST?
As part of the DHS ICMS outreach team, the Mental Health Specialist utilizes their expertise in mental health to provide field-based case management and supportive services to individuals experiencing homelessness. Responsibilities of the Mental Health Specialist include:
WHAT YOU BRING
- Conducting daily street outreach to develop relationships and build rapport with clients to provide and link them to services that support obtaining and maintain stable housing
- Conducting intake, mental health, and crisis assessments in the field to identify and provide appropriate services and interventions
- Developing plans of intervention for clients that address all identified needs including housing, on-going case management, primary and mental health services, and substance use treatment
- Providing advocacy and case management services that connect clients to long-term supportive services and resources that promote obtaining and maintaining permanent housing including:
- Obtaining identification documents
- Housing navigation, location, and application and advocating for clients with landlords
- Referrals and information for necessary services
- Employment assistance
- Benefit application and advocacy
- Providing transportation and accompanying clients to appointments to ensure access to services
- Working with community providers and law enforcement to ensure seamless referrals, a smooth transition into housing, and appropriately address safety and mental health issues for clients
We’re looking for candidates that:
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience with advanced and evidence-based interventions such as Harm Reduction, Motivational Interviewing, Critical Time Intervention, Housing First, and non-violent crisis intervention techniques
- Demonstrate engagement and rapport building skills with hard-to-reach clients
- Have experience assisting with SSI and SSDI application (SOAR or BEST certification strongly preferred)
- Are proficient with technology, computers and Microsoft Office
- Work just as well independently as they do on a team
- Exercise mature judgement, and are highly motivated, self-starting and proactive
- Are excellent at communicating, whether in writing or verbally
- Have a strong sense of prioritization and can coordinate multiple demands in a high-pressure environment
For this role the Mental Health Specialist must:
- Hold a license eligible Master’s Degree in social services (e.g. MSW, MFT)
- Be able to work the 3:00 am - 11:30 am shift five days a week
- Be able and willing to work flexible hours which may include evenings or weekends
- Have employment eligibility verification
- Have or be able and willing to obtain CPR/First Aid training
- Provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination
- Have reliable transportation and:
- A valid driver’s license
- Proof of insurance and ownership for personal vehicles used during work duties
- The ability to qualify for PATH insurance coverage
- Successfully complete the following as a condition of hire:
- Tuberculosis Test
- Background Screening
- Drug Test
PATH will require all employees to be fully vaccinated
for COVID-19. All prospective hires will be expected to provide proof of vaccination as part of the pre-employment credentialing process.
